Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally clarified that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
